hello Alexandra!

Danke sehr. I thought I'd try and put down a note you might be able to use on the website for prospective future customers, so here goes:

Attention German Language Course Seekers!

If you're like me before I came to Bamberg in May 2006 you´re probably traveling the web to see what´s out there in terms of residential German courses, and unable to decide what´s the difference between one and the other.

Well, as someone who has just spent two weeks in Bamberg, here´s a short unsolicited testimonial. What you have here is a small, private and very personal language school, run by a very dynamic woman with great verve and attention to the individual needs of each student and a great sense of fun.

Alexandra (for it is she!) is backed up by a very strong team of experienced teachers, all of whom seem to be still blessed with the enjoyment in their work and their students´ progress which the best teachers display, on top of a very good understanding of the different needs of learners at different levels and of the best means of achieving success. All are treated equally - each student is a paying customer and there are no favourites. And it works like that.

The course itself is a very good one - covering particular areas of difficulty with great thoroughness. In addition, a good deal of thought goes in to the question of lodging. I heard no negative comments about anybody's lodging, and in my own case I was particularly lucky to have as my hosts a couple who drew me in to the whole range of their social and family activities during the time I was there: their own patience with my stuttering attempts to express myself was a huge bonus in my language development.

Then there is the emphasis the school places on out-of-class activities. There´s a pretty extensive social programme, in which teachers also take part,as well as the weekly biergarten evening get-together where students and staff are joined by former students and some of the hosts. Each week seems to be different in this respect, ensuring that students staying for more than the basic fortnight don´t find their schedule being repeated. Lastly, Bamberg is a lovely place. Big enough to boast a university and all that goes with that, loads of attractive eating and drinking places, cinemas, a theatre and concert hall and high grade tourist attractions, but small enough for you to feel at home very quickly. An extremely bike-friendly place and the school rents out bikes for commuting and leisure very reasonably. Lovely gentle hilly countryside all around with beautiful little villages. Ideal for a weekend cycle ride.

The age range in the school varies a good deal from period to period, apparently. It was youngish when I was there, but the following week an older age cross section was expected. And age or nationality (and there´s a very wide range of those) didn't´t seem to make much difference either in the classes or socially - there´s a great feeling of equality: We´re all here to learn and help each other. Ultimately, the extent of progress depends on the individual as much as on anything else. It´s quite difficult to recommend the best policy re. the extra private lessons.

There was a good deal of variety in people´s approach. Those who absolutely needed to make super progress take an afternoon one-to-one (90m) three times a week (or more??). That´s quite heavy, since on top of that there´ll be anything between an hour and 2.5 hours homework to do for the morning classes. And if you have private lessons on top of that, you´ll have more homework for that. But it´s definitely worth taking some. Personally, if I were doing it again, I´d take two afternoons a week of private classes and try and integrate the work done in those classes as closely as possible with the main course bearing in mind that in a two week stay, for example, you won´t cover the same ground as you will in a 4 week course so the afternoons can be used to fill the gaps.

The great thing also is the emphasis on informal language practice outside the classes. Hosts, as I´ve said, can be fantastic, but when I was here I found everyone making a real effort to speak German with each other during the informal sessions. Mistakes left, right and centre, but great confidence building sessions.

One other person on the course had been to several other courses previously in other parts of Germany and was definitely of the view that this was the best. I won`t say that after two weeks I´m fluent, but next time I come back to Germany I will definitely not be asking everyone "Sprechen Sie bitte Englisch?" as before. OK, Alexandra - can I have my arm back now? Tschuss
