Liebe Alexandra,

OK. Ein bisschen spät aber was kannst Du von mir sonst erwarten? Jedenfalls vermisse ich Bamberg und alle die Bekannten die ich dort kennen gelernt habe. Hier sind ein paar Wörter auf dem Englisch. >>>

"Learn German and enjoy Bamberg beer"

For just over 1 year I was working in the Swiss office of my Australian company (medical devices) with stilted progress in the German language. I am from Sydney and all of my European colleagues speak excellent English, which limits the opportunities to practice German, especially in a busy day. So I figured I needed an intensive course. But why Treffpunkt in Bamberg? Its excellent web site helped me realise that this was no ordinary language school.

If you know the American TV show Cheers, then you're probably aware of the theory that alcohol is nature's way of improving brain performance: killing the slower brain cells to ensure the survival of the fittest ones. I think this is also one of the secrets to Treffpunkt's success. They are committed to regular social gatherings where friendly teachers, students, ex-students, host families and locals help you sample delicious beers from the breweries of Bamberg. A great way to overcome classroom inhibitions, practicing what I had just learnt during the day, making mistakes and practicing again. All without realising: brilliant!

Of course there are the weekend excursions to various sights and destinations in Germany, in case the old baroque town of Bamberg was not enough. And there are the evening bike rides and in-school activities like impromptu singing lessons and cooking classes. Every waking minute was actively infused with German from different stimuli. I was also impressed to see ex-students returning to TreffPunkt or visiting Bamberg just to catch up.

My host family was outstanding. Always taking time to include me in their conversations about whatever. The backyard yarn with the neighbours: who drinks what, where Mr & Mrs So & So were going for their weekend, German politics and economy. Or discussing the news on the TV & radio making sure I understood everything. It was all regular stuff, but helpful background for me while living and working in a German-speaking country. After my stint in Bamberg I travelled with the family and their friends to Prague for a weekend, whereupon we caught up with another ex-student, and Czech beer.

So was it all one big party? There was actually serious learning with real German discipline in the midst of it all. But it seems this was the core of a wholistic approach, which the staff made seamless. I had only 2 weeks at Treffpunkt and I left with great sadness. Then I had my first work-related telephone call about significant decisions in a project, completely in German. Admittedly not perfect but more effective than ever before. I am now more inclined to write emails in German, than I was before, thanks to the good grounding I received at the school.

Treffpunkt has different accreditations and stuff and there is a regular exam as part of the course. The material was challenging so it was difficult to realise if I was making progress. But the teachers were very supportive and taught material of our interest, even to the extent of learning about my company's products. All the students were and still are great fun and we remain in contact to practice our written German. But the best part was the surprise from my native-German & Swiss colleagues, customers and acquaintances. Even the Germans are asking about this school. Maybe they haven't tried the local brews yet ...

Mit besten Grüssen,

Allan
